LAKE ANDES VETERAN OF THE MONTH- HAROLD MILLER

The Lake Andes November Veteran of the Month is Harold Miller. Harold is a Veteran of the Korean War. Miller was drafted in 1952 and served until 1954. At the time that Harold was drafted, he was farming with his family outside of Canova. Being drafted didn’t bother Miller, he felt that he was called upon and it was his duty to serve his country. Harold was a Marine. He did his basic training and his job training as a mechanical engineer at Fort Pendelton in San Diego, CA.

DONALD GENE 'CHOPPY' PATTERSON

Funeral services for Donald Gene “Choppy” Patterson, Jr., 48, were held Thursday, November 2 at the YST South Community Center Gym. Burial was in the Holy Fellowship Episcopal Cemetery in Greenwood. Wake services were at the Community Center. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Terry Lee Larson, 56, of Sioux Falls, passed away October 29, 2023, in Sioux Falls. He was born June 4, 1967, in Sioux Falls. Terry was a great man. He could fix just about anything, and if he couldn’t, he’d still find a way. He prided himself on his mechanical skill.

80-YEAR-OLD TREE REMOVED

An 80-year-old tree was removed Thursday, November 2nd fromLindaKrcil’sbackyardinAvon. Thetreewasasilvermaple thatwasbeginningtodecayandbecomeahazardtoneighboring houses and property. Useable logs were taken from the tree to be milled for firewood. The tree removal and cutting was done by Riley Petrik of Petrik Tree Service of Avon.

ORAL INTERP COMPETES AT DISTRICT 3 COMPETITION

The Avon Oral Interp team competed at the District 3B competition in Mitchell November 1st. The team was awarded the 3B District Championship trophy. The following students advanced to the Region 2B competition which will take place in Mitchell November 14: Readers Theater (Abby Gretschmann, Ella Hamilton, Lexi Vanderlei, Jake Namminga, Noah Watchorn, and Hope Kemnitz), Duet (Ashley Tolsma and Kate Swier), Storytelling - Kate Swier, Humorous Prose - Ashley Tolsma, Non-original Oratory - Lexi Vanderlei, and Serious Prose - Noah Watchorn. STATE CROSS COUNTRY

Tyler Tjeerdsma and John Fathke were two captains that attended State Cross Country. Tyler ran a 17:47 time and placed 22nd. John ran a 19:14 time and placed 63rd. Tyler has been running cross country for 6 years. He chose to go out for this sport because he enjoys running, and he is good at it. John has been running for 5 years, and some advice he would give to underclassmen to encourage them to go out is: “If you run Cross Country, you will be in better shape for the next sport’s season you participate in.”
