Read moreThis year was the first year that Andes Central/Dakota Christian participated in the javelin track and field event. The javelin throw became a sanctioned event for South Dakota high school track and field in 2022. This year marked the first time that South Dakota would have a female state javelin champion; for the boys it was the first year since 1929 that a javelin title would be awarded. The javelin that the boys throw weighs 1.76 pounds and is 8 feet 6.4 inches long as opposed to the javelin that the girls throw which weighs 1.3 pounds and is 7 feet 2.6 inches long. In this inaugural year, the Andes Central/ Dakota Christian track team had two boys and four girls who competed in the event this season. Of the six competitors, one, Madilyn Janis made it to the Class B State Track Meet.
Read moreA suspect has been arrested and faces multiple charges in relation to a homicide that occurred in Charles Mix County last week. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Yankton Sioux Tribal Law Enforcement, and the Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office all worked together to coordinate the apprehension of Mackenzie Antelope, 18 of Lake Andes, SD. Antelope has been charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of Quinlan Ream, 22 of Lake Andes, SD. Antelope has also been charged with aggravated assault against Dylan Oullette, 33 of Lake Andes, SD. This case is a prime example of Tribal, State, and County governments working together. Due to this collaborative effort law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were able to act swiftly in order to protect the public. Antelope is currently being held at the Charles Mix County jail on a $500,000.00 bond. He is scheduled for an initial appearance in court next week. Defendants are presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution until proven guilty.
