The Wagner Red Raiders traveled to Sioux Falls to take on the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Saturday, May 4th and started off with a nice lead, but could not hold on and fell to the Chargers 18-8. Mara Wright stepped in the circle first for the Red Raiders pitching three and one-third innings, walking ten. Braxton Nedved finished the last two innings in the circle walking three.

For most Wagner residents, it is no surprise to see construction happening at the Wagner Community School. This year is no exception. Construction began in early April with the dirt work for the WCS garage project and demolition of four existing bathrooms within the school. The school is constructing a 6,500 square foot garage for vehicles and maintenance storage west of the high school parking lot. When completed there will be five garage stalls for vehicles and two oversized stalls for maintenance storage.

Service Learning is a method of learning that incorporates research, action, and reflection. To provide additional electives and provide opportunities for juniors and seniors to connect to their community and surrounding areas, the pilot course began in January. In other words, students who took the new course this spring researched needs within the community. From that research, they identified a topic with which they were most interested, partnered with a community member and created a plan to help their community. Each student created a schedule for the project unique to their talents and interests. Each community partner was someone able to support the student’s project idea because of the community partner’s interests and expertise. As the classroom facilitator, I would like to thank every person and/ or business that showed interest in supporting our students as community partners. The students put in many hours of work, and I enjoyed watching their ideas bloom with their selected community partner’s guidance. Sphynx Foster, after researching, found the area had a high need for mental health resources. She was able to contact the Helpline Center and obtained promotional materials to pass out at the school play. She distributed materials that promoted area resources for anyone struggling with mental health issues. She has partnered with Ericka Kotab, a school psychologist, as her community partner to provide guidance.

The American Legion Auxiliary Greer Unit #11 is honoring Jim Bastemeyer as this month’s Veteran of the Month. Bastemeyer is a Vietnam and Cold War Veteran. Jim served in the National Guard from 1971 until 1977. The war with Vietnam ended in 1973 and the Cold War ended in 1991. Bastemeyer joined the National Guard in 1971 while he was still a junior in high school. He had six other classmates that also joined the Wagner National Guard Unit that same year. Jim attended both boot camp and his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Knox, KY August 10th – December 17th of 1971. He received his AIT training as a supply clerk.

Andes Central JAG students went to St. Louis, Missouri for the National Career Development Conference April 16th-21st. Their days were filled with NCDC activities and ceremonies, meeting new people, as well as exploring the city. These students had a wonderful experience and did a great job representing Andes Central! Congratulations to Anais, Syrianna, Mahipya, Muriel, Kashton and Mr. Hooks on a job well done. Courtesy photo
