The Lady Raiders traveled to Winner for the Sodak 16 to take on the Lakota Tech Tatanka for a berth to the Class A State Tournament. Both teams would come out firing and exchanging baskets only to find Lakota Tech leading 18-17 after the first period. Wagner would build a 5 point advantage in the second period only to find the scored knotted at 31 after the first half. The Raiders would though start attacking off the dribble and forcing Lakota Tech in foul trouble. The third quarter Wagner would start to impose their will on the inside with a paint touch after paint touch. Wagner would shoot 18 free throws in the third quarter alone. The pounding of inside touches would continue in the 4th. Wagner would take a 7 point lead early in the 4th but the Tatanka would knot up the score at 50 all with about 4:41 left in the game. Wagner would hold their composure and then once again attack the rim off the drive or get the ball inside. Wagner would go 9-9 from the charity stripe in the 4th and build as much as a 10 point lead with just under 2 minutes remaining. The Raider would punch their ticket for the 3rd time in 4 years to the STATE tournament with a 66-58 victory. Both teams wouldn’t shoot it that well from the field as they would both shoot 33% from the floor. The Tatanka would go 24-72 from the floor while the Raiders would go 15 for 45. The game would weigh in the balance of the charity stripe where Wagner would convert on 34-43 free throw attempts compared to 3-7 for Lakota Tech. The Raiders would also dominate the glass 43-30. Wagner would have 19 turnovers compared to 12 from Lakota Tech. Ashlyn Koupal would lead all scorers with a monster double-double 38 points, 19 boards, 5 blocks and 2 steals. Lydia Yost would reach double figures with 10 points, 9 boards, and 5 assists. Ravyn Medricky would add 9 points, 11 boards, and 2 steals off the bench. Hayden Knudsen would chip in 6 points, 3 boards and 5 assists. Braxton Nedved would round out the scoring with 3 points and 2 steals. “This was a hard fought battle. It’s sometimes hard to find a rhythm when you haven’t played for a week. We didn’t shoot it the best tonight but defensively we didn’t put them on the line and we did enough to disrupt their dribble drive. We got them in major foul trouble early in the third quarter but they just kept coming at us and hitting big shot after big shot. In the second half we dominated the paint on offense. The first half we may have got only a couple paint touches. In the second half we lived there and they had no answers for it. This was a great challenge for us and we are proud of how the girls played and represented Wagner. Let’s go make some noise now at the STATE A’s in Spearfish!”
