A common lament I hear from my patients as they try to discuss a real concern they have about their body: “I’m sorry; this is so disgusting!” Their cheeks burn with shame as they tell me how their bowels have betrayed them. No matter what the issue is, so many of my patients are mortified discussing their diarrhea, constipation, fecal incontinence. My response, always, is “you can’t gross me out – we talk about poop every day in this clinic!”

The Avon Oral Interp team competed at the Yankton Lewis & Clark Oral Interp Invite October 28th. The following students received awards: Kate Swier and Ashley Tolsma - 1st place Duet, Erica Cahoy and Jake Namminga - 2nd place Duet, Ella Hamilton and Abby Gretschmann - 4th place Duet, Readers Theater (Lexi Vanderlei, Abby Gretschmann, Jake Namminga, Hope Kemnitz, and Ella Hamilton) - 1st place, Ashley Tolsma - 1st place Humorous, Charli Simpson - 4th place Humorous, Kate Swier - 1st place Storytelling, Lexi Vanderlei - 2nd place Non-original Oratory, and Erica Cahoy - 4th place Poetry. Tolsma’s Cove celebrated its 18th year in business in Avon October 13th. The owners of Tolsma’s Cove are Mark and Julie Tolsma. Eighteen years is also how long Tolsma’s Cove has been a member of the Avon Chamber of Commerce. The reason they joined the Chamber of Commerce was that it is a network of support for and from other businesses in helping to keep Avon a close-knit community. The Tolsma’s felt that being a part of the Chamber of Commerce really brought home the “Small Town-Big Heart” slogan of Avonandthatwassomethingthatthey wanted to be a part of.
