We have had a lot of exciting opportunities in the Music Department the last few months! We sent in audition recordings to the SDHSAA for their process of choosing National Anthem singers. We had three different groups selected to singfortheFallSemester!To start,October15thSarahSwier sang at State Soccer in Tea. Then Sarah Swier, Kimberly Tolsma, and Ashley Tolsma sang at the State Football Championships at the Dome in Vermillion November 11th. Lastly, Ashley Tolsma sang a soloatStateVolleyballinSioux FallsNovember18th.Amongst all of these valuable events, we took a bus load of High School students to watch Mt. Marty's production of 'Pippin' in Yankton. It is great to expand student's horizons and we were so happy to organize this for them!Congratulationsonall of these accomplishments!

Read moreAll-State has been a tradition since Mrs. Schultz started teaching here in Avon. All-State is a state-wide event where students from all over the state come together to sing inalargegroupconcert.Avon’s mainquartetthisyearincludes Sarah Swier, Kimberly Tolsma, Noah Watchorn, and Kley Heumiller. The alternates this year include Hailey Gillette, Erica Cahoy, Caleb Wallinga, and Landon Thury. There are a lot of small towns that have decided to give up All-State, so Mrs. Shultz is so glad that we have stuck with it for so long. When asking Noah Watchorn about his experience with All-State this is what he had to say, “I had a wonderful experience at All-State choir. I got to experience being among the best high school choirs in South Dakota, directed by an amazing and eye-opening director. As well as, seeing how music can bring all types of students from across South Dakota to perform beautiful pieces of music in great ways.”
Read moreKimberly Tolsma was born on June 11, 2004 and is the daughter of Jeff Tolsma and Misty Hanvey. She has two siblings, a sister and brother, Ashley and Beau Tolsma. Her favorite subject in school is anatomy. She likes anatomy because she thinks the human body is very interesting and complex. Kimberly’s most challenging task as a senior is deciding what she wants to do for the rest of her life at 18 years old and experiencing all of her “lasts” throughout the year. In her spare time, she enjoys volleyball and cheerleading for football and basketball. She also enjoys working at the nursing home in Tyndall on the weekends, and she loves boating, traveling, and trying new things. One quote that Kimberlylivesbyis“Whatever you do in life, do it with your whole heart or don’t do it at all.” Her favorite high school activities are all- state choir, football cheerleading, volleyball, and HOSA. One memory that Kimberly Tolsma will never forget during her time at AHS is playing high school sports, and going to Hawaii to sing in the USA Honors choir becauseherchoirteacher,Mrs. Schultz pushed her out of her comfort zone and helped her become the best she could be today.

There are many challenging parts of being a senior, but for Cade the hardest part is leaving all the underclassmen behind. In Cade’s spare time he enjoys hunting hogs, coyotes, and deer. His favorite inspirational quote is “When you have a dream,you’vegottograbitand never let it go”-Carol Burnett. Cade’sschoolactivitieshaveincluded football and track. One of Cade’s favorite high school memories is how welcoming all the teachers and kids were on his first day at Avon School.
