The Fort Randall Casino and Hotel held their 27th Annual Indian Day Celebration Contest Powwow June 21st through June 23rd during their 33rd Anniversary celebration. The Powwow began Friday, June 21st with the location having to be moved to the Yankton Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Center gymnasium due to flooding conditions. The three-day event started on Friday with the blessing of the grounds followed by the calling of all grass dancers and the night ending with a drum calcutta. Saturday was supposed to begin with the Run with the Ancestors, but due to weather unfortunately was cancelled. Dancer points were given followed by the princess contest and fireworks at dusk. Sunday was the day of committee specials. There were many dance contests and vendors on hand at the annual event.

I called Pierre and was told there has been a delay in starting the study due to an audit concern. There is no definite timeline on when the study will start. The friend’s group has only raised about one third of the $45,000 needed to match the grant from the transportation department (federal gas tax money). This money is only for the study, not for any construction.
