GORDON SHIELDS, SR

Funeral services for Gordon Shields Sr. were Friday, September 13 at Armory in Wagner. Burial was in the Whiteshirt Cemetery, rural Marty. Wake services began Wednesday at the Armory. Peters Funeral Home of Wagner was in charge of arrangements. Gordon was born to Evelyn C. White Shirt and William C. Shields on June 4, 1948. He died Sunday, September 8 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. He attended the day school near White Shirt homestead at Wahehe 81. He went on to high school at Hare School, Todd County, and also graduated from there. He attended college in Springfield, SD. He didn’t finish due to the draft in 1969. He served in Vietnam until 1971. Gordon worked for the Ihanktonwan Nation in the capacity of grant writer, he developed many programs in the areas of education, health, environmental issues, and served on many boards, He ended his work career after 30+ years with the tribe. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, basketball, softball, cooking, gardening, canning, and working with the elders. He was also a shade tree mechanic. Gordon was a superior father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He can be remember best as a family man as he always provided love, support, and guidance. Gordon was proud of his children: Little Rita Flood (Pinky), Christa Shields, Beau Shields, Gordon Hare, Shelly Archambeau, Narcisse (Thumper) Shields, LeeAnne Shields, Gordon Shields Jr., Jason Shields, Cody Shields, Faron Cooke, and Bill Shields. Gordon is survived by his siblings: Judy Hawk, Letha Hare, Mary Morrow, Frank Sanchez, Anita Sanchez, Morris Sanchez, and Dona Chopper; his children; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents Evelyn White Shirt and Willian Shields; children: Beau Shields, Shelly Archambeau, Cody Shields, and Faron Cooke.
