About 80 people gathered in the Avon City Park on August 6th for the summer reading finale put on by the Avon Public Library. The afternoon started with 16 children meeting at the school to build 2-liter pop bottle rockets with Paul Kuhlman, assisted by Loretta Knodel, Rilyn Thury, and Hoyt Brandt. Next,theOutdoorCampusfromSiouxFallsputonan hour long presentation entitled, “Mammals of South Dakota.” Presenters had pelts on hand for about 20 mammals that live in our state ranging from small to large including mink, skunk, badger, raccoon, fox, wolf, and mountain lion. They discussed each animal’s diet, characteristics, and unique traits. Participantsthengotachancetoinvestigatethepelts and skulls. Next came the excitement of launching the rockets built earlier in the afternoon. Onlookers were surprised to see these simple rockets shoot up over the height of the trees in the park. The rocket that went the highest was named SAM and was built by Zane Rush and Cameron Ramirez. Prizes were presented for finishing Summer Reading Scavenger Hunts and to adults in appreciation of their support for the program. Everyone enjoyed supper served by library board members. The night was wrapped up by everyone having a chance to visit 3 activity/craft stations and making S’Mores.
Read moreWagner Community School officially changed its booster club fundraising program on August 1st for the 2024-2025 school year. What used to be individual booster clubs raising funds has since become the W Club which encompasses all of the WCS fundraising organizations. The purpose of the W Club is to organize donations given from the community to school sponsored events. The goal of this new program is to eliminate fundraising that the individual booster clubs were doing that involved selling items to the people in the Wagner community.

On the 8th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be food trucks and a community BBQ at 5:00 p.m. with a watermelon eating contest, the beef show and sheep show are held that day, with shows starting at noon. On the 9th from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. a community breakfast will be held, the swine, dairy, goat, poultry, rabbit and companion animal shows are held the 9th starting at 8 a.m. You can beat the heat by taking a break in the A/C to check out all the display exhibits! Come on out to see the hard work for the Charles Mix 4-H members!
Read moreAs of 2022, the Charles-Mix County Fair Board has reorganized in order to bring back the Charles-Mix County Fair that was always held in conjunction with the Charles-Mix County 4-H Achievement Days. The first Charles-Mix County Fair since its dissipation was held last year in 2023. The board organized a quilt display and a sausage gravy and biscuits breakfast during the 4-H achievement days. This year the board has expanded the community events at the fair boasting events both Thursday and Friday during the 4-H Achievement Days. Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Joey Koupal will provide a horseshoe and trimming clinic to all wishing to attend. Thursday will also feature a BBQ, an all-age watermelon feed, and live music that will run in conjunction with viewing the 4-H exhibits. On Friday morning the fair board will have a free-will donation breakfast of sausage biscuits and gravy. Members of the Charles-Mix County Fair Board include Alice Koupal, President; Mike Dangel, Vice-President; Jason Gant, Secretary/Treasurer; Bev Steinmark, Josh Bultje, Colin Soukup, Jo Cee Johnston, Lesley Rygaard, and Rhonda Pederson.
