The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) South Dakota held its first annual Girl’s State in 1947 in Mitchell on the Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) campus. 117 girls attended the first year. DWU held the annual event until 1985 when Girl’s State was moved to the South Dakota State University (SDSU) campus. Girl’s State changed locations a final time in 2002 when it was moved to its current location on the University of South Dakota (USD) campus at Vermillion. Currently over 400 young women attend the ALA South Dakota Girl’s State’s annual event.

Read moreThe Sweet Clover 4-H club met Dec 3, 2023, at 6 p.m. President Maddy called the meeting to order. Flag Pledges were led by Lucy and Josie Schloss. Roll call topic was "What's your favorite number?" and 13 members were present. The secretary's report was given by Whitley Wolf. Hailey Brandt motioned to approve the report, seconded by Josie Schloss. The treasurer's report was given by Carmindy. Hailey motioned to approve the report, seconded by Colt Wolf. Next meeting is Jan 14, 2023, at 6:00. Motion to adjourn by Hoyt, seconded by Rilyn. After the meeting we had a gift exchange, decorated cookies, and played bingo. Merry Christmas!
Read moreAvon third graders celebrated Christmas with a “Trip to Germany” with Jake Namminga as the pilot. Some of the highlights of the trip included trying German foods like Stollen and Bavarian Pretzels. St. Nicholas left oranges and Kinder chocolate in our P.E. shoes. We went “shopping” in a German Christmas Market and had to exchange our dollars for Euros. Bode had real Euros that we got to see and touch. We learned about the Neuschwanstein Castle in the Alps, and used map skills to learn more about the population, towns, and landforms in Germany. We crafted Advent calendars and wrote letters to Christkindl. We also learned how to sing “O’Tannenbaum” and wish people a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in German. Read moreTerran Talsma attended and competed in the steer wrestling event at the Junior World Finals in Las Vegas on December 12th through the 16th. His best overall time was 6.4 seconds (an average of his five times), which was good, but did not earn Terran a place at the Junior World Finals. He competed against 45 of the best steer wrestlers in the world. Although he did not place, it did not stop Terran from having an amazing and memorable experience at the event.

Read moreThis week’s featured Andes Central Senior is Abigail Svatos. Abigail is the daughter of Ryan and Erica Svatos. She also has two sisters, Mikayla and Kourtney. During her high school years, Abigail has been involved in volleyball; basketball; wrestling; golf; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA); FFA and National Honor Society. Walking tacos is Abigail’s favorite school lunch and her favorite teacher is Mr. DeNeui. Mr. DeNeui is her favorite teacher because he always puts a smile on his student’s faces and he is the kind of teacher that will do anything he can to help his students succeed. The advice that Abigail has for Andes Central underclassmen would be that it will get better. Abigail’s favorite memories are any activities or events that were with Mr. DeNeui. When her time at Andes Central comes to an end, Abigail will most miss the relationships that she has built throughout high school with the teachers and her fellow students. Abigail’s enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing and working during her free time.
Read moreAmerican Legion Greer Post #11 held its monthly meeting on December 21, 2023 with 37 members in attendance. Commander Clayton Rados thanked the cooks for the delicious prime rib meal. Chaplain Don Kotab gave the invocation which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members. Commander Rados then called the meeting to order Minutes – Adjutant Dave Isebrands read the minutes of our last meeting. Minutes were approved as read.
