February 2 was the one hundredth day of school for the Avon School District. To celebrate this day, Mrs. Benita Khulman’s first grade class participated in several one hundred day themed activities. Students were dressed up like they were one hundred years old and made “Day One Hundred” hats.

On Wednesday, February 2, grades seven through twelve had the opportunity to listen to a speaker talk to them about resiliency. Ryan Dannen, a sergeant in the army, presented information to help kids deal with the emotional baggage associated with growing up. He offered advice. “Don’t stay silent.” “Take a moment to think about the things that affect you negatively.” “Say things from a positive perspective.”

We have been sustained by your prayers and felt the arms of our wonderful community of family and friends firmly wrapped around us. We are so blessed to live in such a wonderful community. A special thank you to Dr. Huber and all the staff at the Prairie Center at Avera McKennan for all the care received during his battle with cancer. Also, thank you to the staff at Avera Sacred Heart and St. Michaels Avera for caring for him in his final months. Thank you to Arlis Kafka and the Wagner Cancer Society and the Avon/Dante Pink Ladies for their donations and care during Ernie’s battle. We are grateful for Father Jim and Father Joe for all the prayers, visits and for the beautiful service and to the St. Mary’s Altar Society for providing a wonderful time of fellowship after the service. Many thanks to American Legion Greer Post #11, Rollie Bucholz VFW Post #7319 & SD National Guard Honor Guard for the Military honor at Ernie’s burial. We are profoundly grateful to Chad and Lisa Peters for their loving support and guidance and helping us provide a celebration of Ernie’s life. There are so many others to thank, please know that no kind word or act went unnoticed. Ernie was touched by so many and we truly appreciate you all. Ernie will forever be in our hearts as will all of you who prayed and supported him.
Read moreKathryn Doom was selected as the winner of the South Dakota VFW Voice of Democracy contest. Winners of the Voice of Democracy. Kathryn's audio essay was one of three from the Wagner Community School that advanced to District competition. Her essay was selected as the District 7 winner and advanced to the state to be judged along with the other 4 district winners. Her essay was selected as the best of the best and will now compete at the national level where she will receive a scholarship ranging for $1,000 to $30,000.
