Shane Shields, 51, of Marty died Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in Wagner. Final viewing was Saturday, May 7 at the White Swan Center followed by graveside services at St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Marty. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Shane D. Shields was born on January 17, 1971 in Rosebud to Joseph M. Shields, Jr. and Sherry Hollow Bear. At six months old he was then raised by his grandmother Susan Lance Shields in Old Ringer Thunder and he also stayed with his grandfather Rev. Joseph M. Shields, Sr. on the Yankton Sioux Reservation. He also lived with his sister Bernadine G. Shields in Lake Andes. He traveled with his grandfather to NAC ceremonies to different reservations. Both grandparents taught him to understand the Lakota and Dakota languages.

Shane attended school at Todd County and Marty Indian School. He became a young father to Cheyenne R. Shields and Lance T. Shields. As a child he learned how to make quillwork and dream-catchers from his grandmother as she had mostly grandsons. As he got older, he left the reservation with his father and spent a few years in Washington and Oregon, helping him with different ceremonies.

Shane moved back to the Yankton Sioux reservation in 2012 and helped his father and brother with ceremonies around the community. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. Shane enjoyed working outside, riding horses and planted a garden each year while his father was still alive. He also did a lot of walking and made many friends in the area. He traveled to church camp meetings and helped set up tents with Donna and Vernon Chopper. After the passing of his father and younger brother Joe, he was in mourning. His life was never the same again as he grieved and missed them so much.

Shane had a vast amount of knowledge of our traditional beliefs that he was taught by his grandparents and father. He was baptized in the Native American Church and had a unique style of singing. He lived a very humble life and will be greatly missed.

Shane is survived by his children: Cheyenne Shields and Lance Shields of Mitchell; grandchildren: Cassidy, Lawrenzo, Lawren and Leanne; siblings: Marcus and Telly Shields, Twila Little Brave, Michael and Kenneth Little Brave, Jr. and many other relatives.

Shane was preceded in death by his parents Sherry Hollow Bear and Joseph M. Shields, Jr; siblings: Bernadine G., Stephanie, Melanie Shields and Joe M. Shields III; paternal grandparents Susan Lance and Rev. Joseph M. Shields, Sr; maternal grandparents Nell and Josephine Hollow Horn Bear.
