Mary was born on August 29, 1937 to George and Hermina Canfield on the family farm southeast of Wagner, the sixth of seven children. She attended Rouse #5 country school in rural Wagner, through the 8th grade. Years later, she went on to receive her G.E.D. On August 10, 1954 she married David Bucholz Jr in Lake Andes. Over the next ten years they were blessed with four daughters. She enjoyed being a stay at home mom, raising the girls until they were all off to school. Mary then went to work at Cleo’s cafe and then worked as a cook at the Wagner School and Buche Foods as Bakery Manager. After her husband passed away, Mary moved to Mitchell for a few years and worked for the Davison County Jail and also the Senior Citizen Center until she decided to move back to her hometown of Wagner. Unable to sit still, she took a job at Valley Pump and worked behind the scene until failing health decided to take the energy she had left. Mary enjoyed baking, cooking and gardening to provide for her family, making sure no one ever went hungry. She also loved crocheting, flowers and sitting on the patio swing watching the birds. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. She wanted to always help out where she could. Her family will always treasure the memories she would share of her life growing up on the river bottom with her mom and brothers and sisters.
Thankful for having shared her life are her daughters, Brenda (Paul) Jennings of Bancroft, Tammy (Jim) Thornton of Wagner; son-in-law Jimmy Anderson of Mitchell, grandchildren: Jason (Royce Vagner) Anderson, Cameron (Terra) Anderson, Anthony Abdvais, David (Desire’) Jennings, Clinton (Lindsay) Thornton, Matthew Thornton, Julia (Tyler) Sassaman; nine great-grandchildren: CJ and Amelia Anderson, Emily, Blake and Brooke Jennings, Olivia and Finnley Thornton, and Jacob and Zoey Sassaman. Brothers, Benjamin (Diane) Canfield of Liberty Lake, WA, Arthur Canfield of Avon; sisters Bess Houska of Yankton and Mildred Ramsdell of Wagner.
