The Wagner Boys Basketball team lost a heartbreaker to the Winner Warriors Friday night to open their season. The Warriors made a shot as time expired in overtime to defeat Wagner 51-49. The game was close from start to finish, neither team held more than a 7 point lead. Wagner trailed 14-10 after the first period and 24-21 at halftime. The game was knotted at 36 after three periods and 44 after four quarters. Winner outscored Wagner 7-5 in overtime. The Raiders trailed by 3 with 24 seconds left, Jesse Zephier made a 3 point basket to tie the game with 7.8 seconds left. Winner dribbled the ball the length of the court and made a jump shot to win the game as time expired. Preston McFayden led the boys with 17 points and had 6 rebounds. Parker Petry scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Brady Cournoyer led the team with 9 rebounds and scored 9 points. Carlos Galindo added 7 points, and had 4 assists. Jesse Zephier scored 6 points and had 5 assists. The boys travel to Plankinton on Tuesday night.

Wagner would start on a roll with a 21-6 advantage after the first quarter and increase their lead to 39-15 at the half. Wagner would increase their lead to 57-31 and come away with a 71-57 victory to start off the season. Wagner would shoot 28-52 from the floor for 54% while holding Winner to 20-55 for 36%.

This year’s team is led by five seniors including Preston McFayden, Parker Petry, Brady Cournoyer, Jeremy Cheyenne and Frank Soukup. The team has one returning junior, Ky Arpan. Returning sophomores for this season are Jesse Zephier, Carlos Galindo, Javian Pesicka and Leon Fields. Cruise Koupal will be the lone freshman returning for the Raiders.

The final member of the Thunder is sophomore, Audrey Dehaan.
Read moreIn an exciting turnout of student-athletes wanting to wrestle this year for the Andes Central Thunder team which went from last year’s three wrestlers to this year’s eight team members is quite an improvement, so much so that the wrestlers are this year practicing on their own mats at Andes Central. Last year the team was so small that the Andes Central wrestlers would practice with the Wagner Raiders and Raider Head Coach David Kocer would help train them for meets. With more athletes comes a new head coach, Coach Chris Derry. This is Coach Derry’s first year as a wrestling coach in South Dakota.
