The Red Raiders maintained their lead throughout the second half. 3 players scored double digits for Wagner, Preston McFayden led the way with 14 points, Joey Cournoyer added 13 and Parker Petry 12. Jesse Zephier scored 4 points, Braxton Knudsen and Brady Cournoyer each scored 2 and Gabe Houseman had 1 point.
Read moreThe Red Raider boys picked up their first win of the season against Menno Tuesday night. The Red Raiders shot the ball well early and played good defense in the second half. Wagner led 23-14 after the first period and 39-27 at half time. Wagner allowed 17 second half points and won the game by a final score of 62-44. Chris Nelson led the team in points with 16, Chris also had 6 rebounds. Preston McFayden added 12 points, Matt Link and Ted Slaba scored 7 each, Carter Cournoyer scored 6, Joey Cournoyer 4, Hunter Lhotak 3, Glenn Cournoyer 2 and Gabe Houseman 1. The Red Raiders out rebounded Menno 37-33 and Wagner forced Menno into 20 turnovers.

Read moreThe Red Raiders defeated Avon in the JV game on Friday night. Wagner jumped out to a 13-4 lead after the first period. The Red Raiders held Avon to just 3 points in the second period and led 28-7 at half time. Avon won the third period scoring 14 and holding Wagner to 9 making the score 35-21. Wagner did not allow a basket in the fourth period and won the game by a final score of 52-21. The Red Raiders had a very balanced scoring attack led by Joey Cournoyer who had 8 points, Jesse Zephier added 7, Hunter Lhotak, Braxton Knudsen, Parker Petry, Gabe Houseman, and Brady Cournoyer all scored 6 points each. Ty Aungie added 4, Frank Soukup 2 and Preston McFayden 1.

Wagner would out score the Jaguars 33-15 in the 2nd and third period and roll to a 67-33 victory. Ashlyn Koupal would lead all scorers with 27 points, 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Emma Yost would post back to back double-doubles with 17 points, 12 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Lydia Yost would reach double figures with 10 points, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Shalayne Nagel would net 8 points, grab 3 boards, dish out 4 assists and get 3 steals. Macy Koupal would finish with 3 points, grab 5 boards, dish out a game high 7 assists, and come away with 3 steals. Eve Zephier would round out the scoring with 2 points, 5 assists and 3 steals. Wagner would shoot 55% from the field 28-51 while the Jaguars would shoot 13-38 for 34%. Wagner would out rebound their opponent 29-17. Wagner would commit 8 turnovers compared to 18 from the Jaguars. “Another all-around team effort on both ends. We shot the ball well, delivered some great passes both in transition and the half court. Hit perimeter shots when we needed to. Now we need to refocus for next week as we got three games Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.”

It was 7 days since their last game and only one practice in that time the Raiders hosted the Cavaliers from Bon Homme last Friday night in girls basketball action. Both teams would start out a bit sluggish with the ball bouncing around a bit. After the Raider would brush the rust off Wagner would open up a 20-11 first quarter lead. The Raiders would increase their lead after out scoring Bon Homme 24-4 in the second holding a 44-15 halftime lead. Wagner would out score the Cavaliers 23-13 in the second half winning the game 67-28. Wagner would shoot 52% from the floor converting on 28-54 shots while holding Bon Homme to 27%, 9-33 from the floor. Wagner would dominate the glass 34-7. The Raider would commit 12 turnovers compared to 21 from Bon Homme. The Raiders would dish out 23 assists. The Raiders would be led in scoring by Ashlyn Koupal with 23 points, 5 rebounds, a team high in both steals and assists with 6 apiece. Emma Yost would record another double-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Shalayne Nagel would be the third Raider in double figures with 11 points, 3 boards, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Macy Koupal would finish with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Lydia Yost would net 6 points, grab 3 boards, and dish out 2 assists. Eve Zephier would round out the scoring with 2 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. “I thought the girls responded well due the circumstances they were dealt with the weather. We aren’t in our game tip-top shape as fatigue showed. After having 10 first half turnover we did a much better job the second half of taking care of the basketball. Offensively we did a great job of executing and on the defensive end we did a nice job of taking away their screen and roll.”
Read moreThe Lady Raiders traveled to Avon last Saturday after their big win against #5 Sioux Falls Christian on Friday. Wagner started out the same way they would finish on Friday opening up a commanding first quarter lead 24-6. Avon did not go quietly, as they chipped away and cut the lead to 35-23 at the half. Wagner regrouped at halftime and clamped down on defense to hold Avon to just 9 points while scoring 33 of their own to take a 68-32 victory. Wagner hit 27-53 from the floor for 50% while holding the Pirates to just 27% shooting 12-45 from the floor. Wagner out rebounded Avon 35-26. The Raiders commited 11 turnovers compared to 20 from Avon. Ashlyn Koupal led all scorers with 24 points, 5 boards, 3 blocks, 2 steals and 2 assists. Emma Yost hit the 20 point barrier with 21 points and 8 boards. Shalayne Nagel netted 6 points, dished out a game high 10 assists, grabbed 6 boards, and came away with a game high 4 steals. Lydia Yost scored 6 points, grabbed 6 boards, dished out 4 assists and came away with 3 steals. Eve Zephier finished with 5 points and 4 assists. Macy Koupal added 3 points, grabbed 7 boards, dished out 2 assists and came away with 2 steals. Braxton Nedved rounded out the scoring with 3 points. “This was a good test for us emotionally coming off a big win the day before and then having to turn around and play the next day. We started off very quickly and then in the second fatigue got the better of our mind set. We hit the reset button at halftime and the girls stepped up to the challenge only allowing 9 points the second half. Now on to 2023. Happy New Year!
